Here is another Pinus Ponderosa tree I saw while looking for moss. It was the nebari on the tree that I saw first. The nebari was massive and very dead looking but yet was still providing nourishment to the tree. It seems the tree trunk attached to the nebari was lying flat on the ground. I followed the tree trunk to where it went. I am guessing around 15-20 feet before I found anything. But what a find it was. Right on top of this fallen trunk was another trunk that went straight up and form an nice small Ponderosa Pine tree. The fallen trunk did not stop at this vertical trunk either, it extended past the upright trunk for around 6-10 feet. This part of the tree was now dead and it also had a dead branch or jin on it.
The upright trunk had all of the foliage on it and the tree looked very healthy. I think something happened to the upright trunk. It was hard to tell but it looked like mother nature chopped the top of the tree off at some time. I could not get a photo as there two many small branches and needles around that area.
It looks like the tree was growing up right for a number of years and then mother nature toppled the tree over onto one of its sides. Only one branch survived the fall and it was now growing straight up and was now the new trunk. This new trunk is now larger then old main trunk lying on the ground. The surviving roots formed a really great deadwood feature on the tree. Both dead and alive what could be better for Bonsai. The only problem I could see is you would never get it out the ground and never get it into a pot. You would need a crane and then a helicopter to fly it out. Trying to drag it out of the forest would be impossible.
The best thing to do with a tree like this to take some photo’s and share the tree with the world.
