I purchased the following Buxus – Boxwood “Green Velvet” from Lowes box store in Parker, Co. I actually bought two of them both being very similar in each other. This is a rather large Boxwood and I have been working on it for a number of years. It measures 26″ tall and 32″ wide. Trunk measurement at soil is around 3 1/2″ wide. The branches are tapered and have good size going from larger to smaller the higher you move up the trunk of the tree. It does get worked on every year and thinned out and unneeded branches removed etc. I started to reduce the root ball in preparation for putting it in a Bonsai pot in 2020.

I recently reworked the tree a few days ago in an upstairs bedroom in Feb, 2021. I actually removed a bunch of lower branches and branches that were crossing over others and not needed. I thought the tree looked pretty good from the front of the tree and was very pleased. I did work on the other sides but thought it looked ok except a couple areas. I decided to wait on those areas until it is put in a Bonsai pot. I tried out my new Samsung Galaxy S10 phone and took some photos of the tree today. I am very impressed with the quality of the photos. It became apparent to me that the tree needs more work on the sides and backside when looking at the photos! This is a very large Bonsai tree and very impressive when you seeing it in person. It is going to look good in a Sara Rayner pot.

This tree is fertilized through out the growing season with organic Plant Tone fertilizer and PENNINGTON ULTRAGREEN AZALEA, CAMELLIA & RHODODENDRON PLANT FOOD 10-8-6. This boxwood loves both of these fertilizers and it is important to feed both to the tree. My boxwoods are all doing better since I have added the Azalea fertilizer to their feeding programs. The sister boxwood of this tree was a lighter green at the start of the growing season before I started using the Azalea fertilizer on it. By the end of the season it was dark green just like the other one.

All of my Boxwoods spend the winter in my garage and do not need any sunlight and do just fine with outside temperatures getting as low -12 (f).

This tree is going to be a magnificent Bonsai tree with just a little more work on it.
