I have one Honeysuckle Bonsai in the collection and it is a Lonicera japonica ‘Purpurea’. I purchased the plant from Todays Nursery in Parker, Co. It was in a one gallon pot when I brought it home. It had a single trunk with a little movement in it. I thought it might make a nice smaller sized tree. I kept the tree in its nursery pot for several years and just kept cutting it back. Last year the tree was bare rooted and placed in a Lynn August one of a kind porcelain pot. Lynn hand carves all these of these pots and no two are the same. The tree pouted for a while and killed off numerous branches before it threw in the towel and started to put out new buds everywhere. It is now very healthy and grows quite well. You really have to keep on top of the tree now to keep the branches small. This is a scissor tree, no need to use larger concave cutters on it. Right now the color of the leaves is more green then purpurea because it is sitting under 30% shade cloth. The leaves will darken up if placed in full sun. This is a very small tree and my even be a shohin as I have not measured it. The tree will fit in the palm of your hand. It could be used as an accent plant or Bonsai tree. Sometime trees are right under our nose and we just walk right on by them. This tree was hiding in the perennial section of the nursery. This is a fun little tree that beginners could easily do. Lynn August’s pot makes this a really cool and special little tree.
