This is my fourth Rhus trilobata ‘Autumn Amber’ Three Leaf Sumac Bonsai Tree #4.  I purchased this tree in the early spring of 2020 at the Longmont Tree Farm north of Denver. At the time of purchase none of the trees had any leaves which makes early spring the best time to look for them. They had around 50 of these sumacs sitting on the ground. I found this one and another one on the outside perimeter of the group. It is easy to see the trunks and nebari and not waste your time looking at them with leaves on them. Now you can still find nice ones with leaves on them but it is going to take a lot longer especially if they have 50 of them.

This tree was styled as a clump/twin trunk tree. It looks like two trees in one pot but the trunks are joined in the back of tree. It has great nebari and the limbs are naturally curvy and look really good. I did wire one or two of the main branches up on the tree. This is its first styling and will need some more work after it leafs out in the spring. This tree still has one green leaf on it. I did not have the heart to pull it off! This tree also has sap oozing on the main trunk in places and will be treated with Bayer Advanced when it is warm enough to water it. I did use cut paste on the larger branch cuts. This is going to be a great in a couple more years.

This species of tree is a good tree for beginning artists to work on. All you need to do is find a good one at a nursery center and buy it. Take your time and look and be picky.
