I always like to see a good rose used as a Bonsai tree. I once found a very nice Red Knockout rose and tried to Bonsai it. It did pretty good for a couple of years and I apparently forgot to water it in the spring while waiting to go outside. It died and I did not try another one until 2016 when I found a couple of small shrub roses at Todays Nursery (Parker, Co.) with purplish leaves and very light pink single petal flowers. Thorns are not to bad on these roses either, they are Rosa Glauca. I entered 1 of the 2 into the RMBS show in 2016 and it pretty much only had Rose Hips on the tree with a few leaves. It was very popular that year. I used a moss from Arkansas and the moss did not do well here Colorado. I decided to re-moss the tree about a week ago. I completed the re-mossing of the tree and the tree had lost a couple of branches and numerous little side branches. I decided to restyle the tree. Today the tree does not look like it did 2016. I like version II of the tree much better. My friend Angela stopped by for a visit and she fell in love with the Rose Tree, well how could a lady not love a Rose Tree? I was turning the tree around on the work table for her and she said the tree had several fronts that all look good. I have been teaching Angela about Bonsai and she still has not touched a tree with a tool. But she does have a pretty good background now and can have a nice conversation about any tree.
I did style my second Rose Glauca a few days ago and it is still in its nursery pot. I will make a new page for it when I have time.
I highly recommend roses for Bonsai, the trick is to find a nice one. These two trees can be picked up with one hand.
