There are many different types of Sage brush that artists try to use as Bonsai and most of them do not live very long in a Bonsai pot for some reason. I have tried several and could not keep them alive for very long. I even have trouble with nursery grown trees still in their nursery pots.
The Denver Botanic Gardens has a Sage Bonsai in their collection. I believe this tree came from a ranch up in Wyoming. The tree is under the care of International Bonsai Master Larry Jackel who is the curator of the Bonsai Pavilion.
I believe this tree is still growing in its native soil which might have a lot to do with why it is still alive after 9 years of being a Bonsai pot. It has not been repotted in those 9 years either. This was one of the Sage brush trees used at the 2012 International Bonsai Convention held in Denver, Co.
