I entered a 3 Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia Catlin) Tree Rock Planting in the local show. The trees seemed to very popular with the public and they had many questions as to how the trees were actually growing on the rock. Most were surprised to learn the lace rock had openings for the tree roots to grow in. The only work done on the lace rock were the 3 drainage holes drilled in different spots. The tree on top of the stone is not planted in a cavity and is merely held in place by 2 wires and the moss growing around the soil. There is a natural hole in the top of the rock that drains down to the tree slanting to the left of the rock. How convenient of the rock to have that hole right where I needed it. Water draining down this hole waters the other tree. What teamwork! A bird attacked the moss the day before the show and the moss had to be repaired. I think a future article will be needed to cover all the tricks used to create this tree. All in all I think it looks pretty good for only being created about 4 months ago.
