I purchased another Rhamnus frangula ‘Asplenifolia’ “Fernleaf” “Buckthorn” to use as a Bonsai. I like this tree a lot, it should make a great Bonsai tree in a couple more years of development. If you want to know more about the species as Bonsai then check out my first tree HERE. I like this tree when I first saw it as it had a lot of good qualities to it. The nebari was good and most of the trunks had movement in them. The leaves are thin and narrow. The more leaves on the tree the smaller they get. I did wire this tree in Feb.  2020 in the upstairs bedroom of my home. I could wire a tree and watch tv at the same time, plus I was warm! What could be better? Plus I could stop any time and take a nap by putting my feet up and chair back and dream about the tree.

I like working on deciduous trees and this species of tree is not really used for Bonsai. I think that is a mistake as the tree is really hardy, nothing seems to bother it. It is very similar to frilly leaved Japanese Palmatum Maple trees but are much lower in price. You can even find larger sized ones with great trunks on them for a reasonable price. They make great Bonsai trees, fall color is yellow.

This tree was grown on a plant bench under 30% shade cloth for the entire growing season. I only moved it to take it into the garage for the winter. This tree does take up a lot of room in the garage when it is fully wired. I take 3 large cinder blocks and stack them on end and then the tree goes on top of the cinder blocks. This gets the tree above other nursery stock sitting on the floor of the garage so the wired branches do not get bent out of shape during winter.

Here is a gallery of the tree taken 02-02-2020:
