I purchased several Chaenomeles speciosa ‘Double Take Scarlet Storm’ bushes to transform into Bonsai. This tree had the largest trunk of the bunch and it had plenty of branches to boot. I allowed the tree to grow where ever it wanted. I saw this particular quince on an add and it took some time before they were being stocked in the Denver metro area. They are pretty easy to find now, but not several years ago. This quince does not have any thorns, cold hardy to -20 degrees and deer don’t seem to like them. Not much chance a deer is going to attack my trees,  but I did see a porcupine strolling down the sidewalk one night. I was very thankful the animal was across the street and did not see the trees in my front yard. I still have visions of it sampling all my nursery stock trees! This was a fun tree to style as it had very long branches from me letting it grow wild. I decided a nice semi-cascade would look best. It did take some time to create the tree. I placed the tree outside on the top bench with the tree hanging over the edge of the bench and out into the walking aisle. I placed a bungee cord wrapped around two posts to keep the tree up on the bench. The tree started to suffer sun/heat damage to the leaves when the tempitures started hitting 90 degrees and higher. I moved the tree to a spot under my brand new arbor/shade cloth benches. My only problem now was to figure out to have the tree under the shade cloth with out it taking up a lot space on the top of the bench. I solved the problem by taking a cinder block and standing it up on its end. The tree was placed on the top of the cinder block and branches were well off the surface of the bench allowing me to place other trees/plants under its branches. The tree has responded well and is now producing new leaves all over the tree. Normally by this time in the past all my quinces were starting look pretty bad. The shade cloth has made a big difference in my quince. Next thing to do is find a pot for it and then re-pot it.

The following photos were taken at the Denver Botanic Gardens where the tree is currently on display. The tree is just now starting to bud out and the tree will soon be covered in red blossoms. I will add to this gallery as the DBG sends me more photos of the tree. I did start to redesign the tree a little. I have decided to expand the apex of the tree to right now and make it much more fuller. So far its a good start and if you study the photos you can see how it is changing. Enjoy!

I took some photos of the tree out of leaf. It sure does look different. The is tree is starting to bud out in the garage. Theres a lot branches on this tree. I have moved it and its cousins to the front of the garage to start moving them outside during the day and back in during the night. I am going to have to re-pot this tree soon.
