Weigela are unusual as Bonsai. It is hard to find one with a decent sized trunk to turn into a Bonsai. If you google Weigela Bonsai you will find a few smaller trees but not any larger ones. I have tried two trees. One with a medium sized trunk and the other with a larger trunk. The larger sized trunk died off after a few years and I am not sure why. The other medium sized tree lost all its branches for some reason and I am not sure why. I have allowed to grow unchecked for several years now and I now of lots of branches everywhere. I get brave and try some styling on it in 2020. But until then it is wintering the garage.

I did find a very nice article on Weigela for Bonsai on the Internet Bonsai Club forum. The title of the post is “Weigela 2006 -2010” by member Herbert A.  In the post he gives some really practical advice on to care for them and when/what time of the year to prune them back. I was unaware of how important this is. If you cut back to late into the season you loose a lot of fine branches. I highly recommend that you read the post.
