I have had this Berberis thunbergii ‘Tiny Gold’ barberry for 4-5 years and I bought it at the Longmont Tree  Farm. I have had this great little tree so long the plastic pot has become brittle and the whole top of the pot has been breaking off each year. The time had come to do something with this small leaved little barberry.

I carried the tree down to the street and slipped it out of its pot and bare rooted the tree. Threw the plastic pot into the trash while I was there. The tree had nice roots with lots of fine roots. I selected a dark green with black accents rectangle pot from Chuck Iker for the tree. It should look great. Currently the leaves are more of a Chartreuse color instead of bright yellow because I have not let the tree sit in direct sunlight since it has leafed out yet. I root pruned the tree some and anchored it into the pot with some wire. I used normal Bonsai soil and the it was done. I did loose one brach on the left side of the tree and all other branch’s/trunks are in good shape. I have been using Rhizotonic on this tree since it was potted. I think it has helped the tree.

It is very difficult to locate one of these barberries with a good size trunk. I look for a barberry that seems to be taller then all of the rest and I start looking at that one. Most of the nursery stock trees do not even have a trunk and are just multi-stemmed shrubs. Good luck finding one. I do not recommend keeping the yellow leaved varieties outside in the winter. Keep them in the garage or cold frame.

I will add more photos as the tree progesses.
