I was browsing Wigerts Bonsai and saw a tree I was not familiar with that had very small leaves and beautiful flowers on it. The tree(s) was a Desmodium Unifoliatium or commonly called Desmodium. I did some research on the tree and they come from south east Asia. Wigerts trees came from Vietnam and were imported some time ago. Information on this tree is hard to find. Wigerts does have a very nice video featuring Mike Lane giving a talk on the species.

Species Overview Desmodium – Mike Lane

The BonsaiNut forum has a lively discussion on the species here with 97 replies on the topic: Have you seen a Desmodium unifoliatum for sale anywhere in the US? There are other discussions as well.

I decided to get one from Wigerts. There is a company selling them on Amazon called Green Paradise Store and I do NOT recommend them. If you want one buy from Wigerts as they are a quality company. Please make sure what you are buying to, there are many “SEED” sellers out in the world that have amazing photos of Bonsai trees and the seeds are very expensive. Read any ad very carefully.

Wigerts have them for sale for every budget from $35 to $600+ range. I purchased a large tree and was not disappointed with its quality or health of the tree when it arrived. It did drop a lot of leaves which is normal and has been recovering under a brand new set of T5 lights. The tree is now blooming under the lights and starting to put out new foliage. The plant room the tree is growing in is very humid even though I live in semi-arid Colorado. I have numerous aquariums in the same room which adds humidity to the whole house. I am very pleased with tree and thinking about getting a smaller one and trying to see I can grow it big.

Here are a few examples of trees for sale in all price ranges by Wigerts, they may be sold or not sold. No I am not getting paid by Wigert’s either.
