Viburnum x Sarcoxie is a little known Viburnum that should be very popular but receives very little attention in the market place. Nicks Garden Center in Aurora, Co. had some when I visited them 05-05-2021. I always like checking out Viburnums where ever I go. I think they make great Bonsai trees. I noticed an out of place Viburnum tree sticking above some others. They had very small leaves and great white flowers. I bent over to smell the flowers and boy did they smell nice. I pulled up the tag to see which variety I was looking at. To my surprise it was a variety I had never seen before “Viburnum x Sarcoxie”. What to do now? I wondered if any of them had a nice trunk so I started bending over and looking sidewise at them trying to see the trunks on them with having to move everything that was in between me and the trees. I thought I found one and it was ok, but I kept looking and I thought I saw one with a nice curvy trunk. I moved a couple of trees out the way and got two hands on it and dragged it over so I could lift it way above the others to pull it out. It was a nice trunk and had nebari on it. Plus a small trunk coming up from one of the roots. Nice curving branches everywhere and flowers all over the place. The size of the flower bunches were rather small for a Viburnum another great trait to have in a Bonsai. I went and got a cart, paid for the tree and brought it home. I spent the rest of the evening designing the tree and giving it its first styling. I took some photo of the tree and after reviewing the photos I can see that it will need more work which should be expected. I will let this tree grow in its nursery pot for a few more years to thicken up the trunks and main branches. I will also apply my Viburnum Leaf and Inter-node technique to this trees every year, more like 3-4 times a year. The trunk on this tree is about 3/4″ thick. I expect it to thicken up very quickly if I allow some unwanted branches to extend out a long way. Probably a branch at the top of the tree so the main trunk expands the most.

So here are a couple galleries of the taken on 02-02-2021.
