Colorado Bonsai – Taxodium distichum (Bald Cypress) Bonsai
I have made a new page for Taxodium distichum – Bald Cypress Bonsai trees. Bald Cypress make excellant Bonsai. They range in size from small to very large. I personally like Flat Top style on Bald Cypress. There is a nice gallery of finished trees to look at.
I am looking to move back home to CO. Granby in particular. Can my Bald Cypress, and Dawn RedWood Bonsai survive that elevation?
Well I checked to see how cold it gets in Granby and the news is not good. It looks like outdoor temps can get as low as -10 to -17 (f) at night for as long as 5 months. There are only 3 months warm enough for the tree to grow in the summer. So my answer would be no there not going to make it in Granby unless you have a heated green house and don’t let the temps get below 32 (f). Your probably going to have to go with some of the native yamadori trees at your elevation. Of course a ficus tree would be a good indor Bonsai tree. Both of your trees grow in the Denver metro area as landscape trees just fine and also make good bonsai here to, but your just to high and to cold for them.
