I found a really nice Viburnum farreri ‘Nanum’ that had a very nice trunk on it and one very long cascading branch at a local nursery. I liked the size of the leaves and thought it would make a good Bonsai tree. I brought the tree home and left it alone for a number of years. The tree grew well and I wintered the tree in a gravel bunker for a number of years. One summer the main trunk on the tree started to die and by the next year it was completely dead. The cascading branch was still alive, go figure. Well the tree then became a cascade tree all on its own. I styled the tree as a cascade in 2018 and it looked pretty good. The tree did back bud on the main trunk and I let these grow hoping to have some day an apex over the main trunk. So far they are growing pretty well. The cascade branch has gone wild with strong growth all over. Fall color is a reddish purple color. It has a very nice pink bloom that is very fragrant. A couple times a summer I go and clip back the growth. In 2020 I will start to reduce the soil in preparation to eventually move it into a cascade pot. I will also start to reduce the leaf size and inter-node size using the my Inter-node & Leaf Size Reduction Technique procedure. This tree likes lots of water and I make sure to water it at least three times when watering. That means I water it once, come back water again and then come back for the third and final time water it again. I do that each day.
