I ran across an incredible Monterey Cypress tree growing on a rock peninsula in the Pebble Beach area of California. The tree is named “The Lone Cypress“. The tree is very famous and is featured on tours of the local area. The tree was damaged by a severe storm and one of the two trunks was torn off leaving a very nice natural jin! Here is a quote from the LA Times about the tree “it stands along famously scenic 17-Mile Drive, raked by wind, swaddled in fog, clinging to its wave-lashed granite pedestal like God’s own advertisement for rugged individualism. … This tree is to the Monterey Peninsula what the pyramids are to Egypt, what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris.” The tree has a had a man made retaining wall erected around its roots. One photo below  shows the tree has cables and straps around the trunks. It even looks like the straps may be damaging the trunks on the tree as it they appear to be eating into the bark/trunk or I could be completely wrong. Pebble Beach has a nice article on the tree to “The Lone Cypress Stands Alone“.
